A career in head and neck surgery

Mr Kevin Smith believes all New Zealanders are entitled to access world-class care in head and neck surgery. He was proud to join and complement the team with his expertise at MercyAscot Head and Neck Service.

Kevin is a consultant head, neck, and thyroid surgeon at North Shore Hospital. He trained as a specialist otolaryngologist, head and neck surgeon in Auckland and Wellington, and was awarded a Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in 2014.

An alumnus of Magdalene College, Cambridge University, and Imperial College School of Medicine, London, Kevin attained Membership of the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 2006. He began his training in ear, nose, and throat surgery in London before making New Zealand his permanent home in 2007.

While completing the prestigious Advanced Head and Neck Surgical Oncology Fellowship at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospitals in London (one of only two Royal College of Surgeons of England accredited head and neck fellowships in the UK), Kevin further developed his expertise in:

  • Head and neck surgical oncology
  • Advanced thyroid and parathyroid surgery
  • Complex skin cancers
  • Minimally invasive salivary gland surgery

After his fellowship, Kevin worked as a consultant in the Head and Neck Unit at Guy’s Hospital, where he enjoyed helping to train a new generation of head and neck surgeons and medical students. He also pursued a range of research interests, participating in the sentinel lymph node for oral cavity cancer programme, and was a co-investigator on a groundbreaking T4 immunotherapy for head and neck cancer clinical trial.

Kevin is a member of the:

  • Royal Australasian College of Surgeons
  • The New Zealand Society of Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery
  • Royal College of Surgeons of England
  • British Association of Head & Neck Oncologists
